RIM says its new BlackBerry phone in testing

(AP) ? BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion said Wednesday that its much-delayed new smartphones are now being tested by 50 wireless carriers around the world.

The Canadian company called it a key step as it prepares to launch the new BlackBerry 10 software and phones in the first quarter of next year.

The phones are seen as critical to RIM's survival. The release will come as the company struggles in North America to hold onto customers who are abandoning BlackBerrys for flashier iPhones and Android phones.

"I'm very pleased to confirm that we have passed a critical milestone in the development of our brand new mobile computing platform," RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement. "This process will continue in the coming months as more carriers around the world formally evaluate the devices and our brand new software."

RIM's current software is still focused on email and messaging, and is less user-friendly and agile than iPhone or Android. Its attempt at touch screens and a tablet were a flop, and RIM lacks the apps that power other smartphones. RIM's hopes hang on BlackBerry 10. It's thoroughly redesigned for the touchscreen, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now expect. A full touchscreen device will be released first followed shortly after by a physical keyboard version.

Heins, who took over as CEO in January after the company lost tens of billions in market value, had vowed to do everything he could to release BlackBerry 10 this year but said in June that the timetable wasn't realistic. Heins says he can turn things around with BlackBerry 10.

"I have spent the last several weeks on the road visiting with?carrier partners around the world to show them the BlackBerry 10 platform and to share with them our plans for launch. Their response has been tremendous," Heins said. "The hard work will not stop here as we build toward launch."

The new BlackBerrys will be released after the holiday shopping season and well after Apple's launch of the iPhone 5, Apple's biggest product introduction yet.

RIM's platform transition is also happening under a new management team and as RIM lays off 5,000 employees as part of a bid to save $1 billion.

RIM was once Canada's most valuable company with a market value of more than $80 billion in 2008, but the stock has plummeted since, from over $140 share to around $7. Its decline evokes memories of Nortel, another former Canadian tech giant, which declared bankruptcy in 2009.

Shares of RIM closed up 4.7 percent, or 36 cents, at $7.93.

Momentum builds for Gaza to secede, Israel and West Bank to become one

After decades of the "two states for two people" blueprint more or less dominating proposals for Israeli-Palestinian peace, a new paradigm is gaining momentum. Under this model, Israel absorbs the West Bank and its 2.5 million Palestinians, while Hamas-run Gaza becomes a separate entity aligned with the Middle East?s rising Islamist powers.

Such a development could potentially improve stability after decades of unresolved conflict, but it represents a blow to Palestinian statehood aspirations as well as to Israelis who see a Palestinian state as essential for their own security. Gaza militants? firing of more than 70 rockets and mortars into Israel today emphasized the security risk posed to Israel by a rogue neighbor that neither it nor the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA), can control.

A visit to Gaza yesterday by the emir of Qatar, a key member of the region?s emerging Islamist alliance and the first leader to make a state visit since Hamas took over in 2007, underscored the fact that Gaza and the West Bank have since become two distinct ? and potentially irreconcilable ? entities. Unless or until that split is resolved, Palestinians can?t present a united front at the peace table with Israel.

RELATED ? Who is Hamas? Five questions about the Palestinian militant group

?It?s a wonderful excuse ? to say, ?Until you settle things with yourselves and we have one address and we can talk to the new leadership [peace talks will be postponed],? ? says Alon Liel, a veteran Israeli diplomat who now works in the private sector. ?And you hear more and more people speaking about the possibility of annexing the West Bank or at least finding an agreement that in practical terms will be one state while Gaza will stay on its own or have an agreement with Egypt.?

Israeli Jews have long eschewed the possibility of a single binational state out of fear that it would sooner or later result in an Arab majority, undermining their ideal of a state that is ?Jewish and democratic.? While the removal of Gaza from the equation would allow Jews to retain a clear majority, the democracy question is more controversial. Many Israeli Jews support ?apartheid? policies if Israel were to annex the West Bank, according to a poll published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz yesterday.

Most significantly, 69 percent said they would not want Palestinians to be allowed to vote in national elections. Other policies include separate roads for Palestinians and Israelis (74 percent); preference for Jews over Arabs for government jobs (59 percent); and separate classrooms for Jewish and Arab children (42 percent).

?In practical terms, we already have one state,? says Mr. Liel, who had a hand in the poll, but, unlike many respondents, would support a single state only if it were democratic. ?The Palestinian Authority is not an independent political unit. It is dependent on Israel for everything, including security. So ? many Israelis feel we don?t have negotiations, we don?t have real pressure from outside world to negotiate, on the ground ? it?s quiet. So why not continue??

GAZA'S SECESSIONISTS

The split between Gaza and the West Bank goes back to 2007, when Hamas ? which had won an overwhelming victory in 2006 parliamentary elections ? violently ousted its secular rival Fatah from the Gaza Strip following a year of rocky relations as the two parties tried to govern together.

Egypt has mediated reconciliation talks for years, at times appearing close to reaching an agreement, and Qatar has tried to bridge the gap as well. But many say that after five years under Hamas rule, Gaza has become a fundamentally different place than the West Bank under the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority (PA), making reunification nearly impossible.

?This split is irreversible in this phase of our history,? says Ghassan Khatib, who until recently served as PA spokesman. ?The factors that led to this split are still in effect.?

Among those factors, he says, are Iran?s encouragement of Hamas, attempts by Israel and the US to discourage reconciliation, and Hamas leaders ?waiting to see the Arab Spring settle in the favor? with support from Islamist leaders.

?Hamas, since they won, is a secessionist movement ? not just in rebellion to the government of the Palestinian Authority," says Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor. "It?s making Gaza a secessionist territory and a de facto state that breaks away from the Palestinian state in the making. That?s a reality that cannot be ignored.?

Especially yesterday. The emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, arrived in Gaza to great fanfare, thanks to his pledge of $400 million in reconstruction aid to the tiny coastal territory. His visit not only underscored Gaza?s emergence as a statelet unto itself, but was widely interpreted as a slight to the cash-strapped PA in the West Bank, which he declined to visit.

While some expressed dismay with funneling such significant funding to a terrorist group, others say that support from Qatar, plus heightened engagement from Egypt and Turkey, could actually help prevent Gaza from being a more radicalized and desperate place.

?We have a new Egypt now, with an entirely new situation of a new Egyptian-Turkish alliance,? says Liel, who adds that Qatar is part of this new Sunni Islamist bloc. ?Having them involved in Gaza can moderate the Gaza leadership, can create in Gaza ? religious leadership aiming at modernization, which would be an unbelievable development. But we have to see if it happens.?

POSSIBILITY FOR FUTURE PEACEMAKING

Mr. Palmor of Israel?s Foreign Ministry says the problem of negotiating with the Palestinians before a Hamas-Fatah reconciliation was addressed at the 2007 Annapolis peace talks, with the Israelis accepting that implementation on the ground would happen gradually.

Then-Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni understood that any peace deal ?wouldn?t be automatically and enthusiastically adopted by Hamas,? but would rather be implemented where possible, says Palmor. ?The idea was, we will negotiate with those who are willing to negotiate. We will reach an agreement. And when we reach that point, maybe it will create a new dynamic that will change reality.?

While the outlook for the two-state solution envisioned at Annapolis appears bleak, Liel holds out hope that the Palestinian bid to upgrade its status to a ?nonmember state? at the United Nations next month could create new momentum in that direction if a majority of European nations backed the motion, indicating substantial international support for the Palestinians' right to a state of their own.

?We know it doesn?t have a practical meaning but it is of a huge symbolic meaning and a huge legal meaning and I think it could reverse the momentum toward the one-state reality,? says he says. ?I think it can change the atmosphere among Palestinians, maybe even in Fatah-Hamas relations. It can definitely change the mood inside Israel.?

Now this concept has totally changed. Even the one who cannot afford tries his level best to hire a good professional photographer who can do the job assigned to him professionally. For this reason now it has become the demand of the society that you have professional photographers in the weddings. These photographers charge high rates also.

Another most important factor which is to be considered for which the wedding photographers are reaching the sky is that they beautifully capture the moment. They have such good aesthetic sense that when you see the pictures afterwards you just can?t believe that it the same place and same moment. They can easily make an ugly person beautiful and a beautiful even more beautiful. We can blame the photographers for cheating with people that usually happens with the profile pictures these days.

Budgeting Tips for New Baby | Being Pregnant

new baby 6 Tips to Help You Budget for a New BabyBabies can be expensive! Whether your pregnancy was planned or a happy surprise, there is no doubt you will likely at some point be a little stressed on how you will add another person to your monthly budget.

While we are planning on adding a fourth baby to our family (hopefully soon) we have already begun talking about how we will be able to?accommodate?our budget. Since we?re not pregnant yet we haven?t started implementing any changes yet, but with money it?s always best to plan ahead!

With some early planning and extra help from friends and family, budgeting for a new baby is not an impossible task.?Click through to read 6 tips to help you budget for a new baby:

1) Be Picky, But Not All At Once: There are a lot of baby products available and it can be easy to get caught up in feeling like you need all of it. To stick to your baby budget, buy only the large items you need (like a safe car seat) and start purchasing when you?re pregnant. If you space out the big purchases, you won?t notice such a huge hit to your budget.

2) Start While You?re Pregnant: Don?t wait to stock up on baby items like diapers for when the baby arrives, start early. Each week buy a pack of diapers (if you?re using disposable) or a reusable diaper and continue to do so for each week. Alternatively, you could purchase a $10 gift card for yourself each week to a large department store. That way, when baby arrives you will have 36-40 weeks worth of savings to use up.

3) Cut Back at Home: If you are looking for ways to increase your baby budget, look at cutting back on some of the extras in the house. If you have the highest cable package or have a home phone on top of cell phones, look at shaving some of those expenses off the house budget. Cut back on lunches and dinners out and opt for shopping grocery sales and you?ll be surprised by how much you could save.

4) Test Drive Single Income: If you will be taking maternity leave, test drive what it will be like to live on a smaller monthly income. Doing so will help you manage easier when the baby comes and you won?t be hit with two life changes at once!

5) Coupons & Samples: Start collecting coupons and samples early. If you will be using disposable diapers, many hospitals give out samples and coupons can be found year round. Ask friends and co-workers to keep you in mind if they come across any baby-related coupons they won?t be using.

6) Lean on Friends: It?s amazing how much you can save for your baby budget when you lean on friends and family to help out. Ask around if anyone has a baby swing or baby clothes they?d be willing to let you borrow. Hand-me-downs are no big thing when it comes to newborn babies because they go so quickly often they?re only worn once or twice.

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful Again

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainThe to-do list is the crux of your daily productivity, but between all the task management apps out there, different productivity methods, and other miscellaneous life hacks, your to-do list has probably gotten cluttered and complicated. Here's how to take it back to basics and craft a to-do list that actually helps you get things done.

We share endless amounts of different tips, tricks, and "life hacks" for increasing your productivity, but at a certain point, it becomes too much and you spend more time hacking your to-do list than you actually spend doing stuff. If that sounds like you, then it's time to revisit how you manage your to-do list.

Some people think to-do lists are a waste of time, that they become guilt-inducing drugs that hinder you from actually being productive. Some say you should be able to remember everything you have to do. We tend to disagree: if you have the right attitude, a to-do list can be a great "backup" for the tasks in your brain. I find that if I write my tasks down, I'm far less stressed because I know I won't forget anything, and when I'm done with one task, I can move right onto the next without reorganizing the list in my brain. Plus, they're perfect for those little tasks that easily fall by the wayside because no one wants to do them: paying bills, calling customer service, and so on.

It may seem ironic that you're reading this article and going through the process when that's the very problem that got you into this mess, but if done right, you should be able to save yourself a lot of trouble in the future. Here's what you need to do.

Pick the Right Medium

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainHow many to-do apps have you tried in the past year? If your answer is more than three, it's too many. Pick one and stick with it. It shouldn't be too hard to pick one based on the devices you use and what you're willing to pay. Check out our Hive Five on the subject to see the minor differences between each, and pick one. We're going to use Wunderlist in the screenshots of this post, since it's our favorite, but the strategies we use should work in nearly any to-do app. If you find an app is too much trouble, pen and paper or a plain text file is a great alternative.

Whatever you end up with, make sure it's easy to use. The quicker you can add and remove tasks, the more time you'll actually spend doing them. You should never spend more than a few seconds in a to-do app at any given time. If you are, you're falling back into that pit of over-organizing.

Add and Organize Your Tasks

Now that you've got somewhere to write your tasks down, it's time to make sure you're using it in a way that makes your to-do list useful (and not just another list hanging over your head). We've covered a lot of this in our guide to making your to-do list doable, and with good reason?those rules are pretty timeless. But we've simplified things a bit so you can slowly ease yourself into your own productivity method. Right now, we want to only think about the most important things that make a to-do list useful. Here are the things you'll want to keep in mind.

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainBreak Big Projects Down Into Actionable Tasks: You've heard this before, but it's one of the most important things you can do. If you need to find a new apartment, then adding "Find an Apartment" to your task list isn't going to help. Instead, add the first step of that project. Maybe that's "Research LA Crime Rates" so you can narrow down a neighborhood. Whatever it is, make sure it's something actionable that you can do in just a few minutes. When you finish that, you can move on to the next task in a project.

Add Any Info You Need to Get the Task Done: Include phone numbers, links, and other info you'll need to start getting the task done. For example, if one of your tasks is calling Comcast Customer Service, your task would say "Call Comcast, 1-800-934-6489." That way, if you're sitting around with a few minutes to kill, you can jump on that task without having to open your browser and find the number.

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainSeparate Work, Personal, and Other Tasks Into Categories: One of my biggest to-do list problems is mixing personal tasks, work tasks, and chores all on the same list. Most to-do apps have a way to separate these. Some apps call it a "context" tag, others have separate "lists" with tabs so you can switch between each. That way, you can view just your work to-dos from 9-5, and your personal to-dos when Saturday comes along and you have some free time to kill. (If you're using the pen-and-paper method, you can just create each list on a separate piece of paper.)

Some also recommend adding a "project" tag to your task list, so you know where it fits in the larger scheme of things. I don't do this, as I find this crosses in the line into "too complicated," but if you find that this tag makes things easier, go ahead and add that too.

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainGive Each Task a Priority: It may seem silly to assign arbitrary numbers or letters to your tasks, and you shouldn't think of these as mega important, but giving each task a simple 1-4 when you create it makes your to-do list organize itself. That way, when you get to work and look at your to-do list, you don't need to think about what to do first?you just start at the top of the list and start working your way down. Remember to factor both urgency and importance into the priority. Again, don't overthink this?you're just giving your to-do list the ability to organize itself, to a certain extent.

Keep the List Short: If you have too many tasks on your list, the whole thing will start to feel overwhelming and you'll run into that guilt-inducing drug problem again. The shorter you keep your to-do list, the more focused you can be on the present. Some say keep it under 20 items, while others say keep it down to 3. Don't think about it too hard?you'll know if it's too big or not when certain things don't get done or when you feel like the list is hanging over your head.

Focus On the Present: One of the best ways to keep your to-do list short and doable is to avoid far-off future tasks. If you don't need to think about it for a few weeks, put it on a separate list (or better yet, your calendar) and worry about it when it requires your attention.

Make Sure Tasks Get Done Every Day

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainSo now you've got your initial task list down, it's time to actually get to work. You shouldn't have to mess with your to-do list too much from now on, as long as you commit to the simple principles outlined above. Check things off as you finish them, add new tasks as they pop up, and don't spend too much time pruning?all its going to do is distract you from your actual work. If you find you need to constantly go in and prune, you need to figure out what it is about your system that's inefficient and get rid of it. If you aren't sure what to do, err on the side of simpler methods.

Each day you should be checking off a number of items. If you aren't, there's something wrong with your to-do list (or you aren't getting anything done). If you need to, set aside a bit of time at the end of the day to quickly evaluate what you want to accomplish tomorrow, make sure those items are at the top of your to-do list, and make sure they get checked off the next day. Don't overburden yourself (after all, new tasks will always crop up during the day), but just make sure your list is getting used and that tasks aren't sitting there for too long. If you have to, purge it at the end of the week and start over to make sure it never stops being useful.

Other "Life Hacks" You Can Add Later

Back to Basics: How to Simplify Your To-Do List and Make It Useful AgainNone of this is to say that the "life hacks" we share every day are useless. It's just that sometimes, we go a little overboard and make things too complicated for ourselves. Everyone works differently, though, and some of those little tips?when used sparingly?can make your tasks a lot easier to accomplish (though they're far from mandatory). Once you've got the hang of your to-do list and using it feels like second nature, here are a few things you might start experimenting with one at a time to make things more efficient.

Again, you don't need to incorporate all of these. Once you get used to having a to-do list that actually works, you may find one or two areas that need improvement, and that's where the above hacks can come in handy. Pick one or two that fit into your workflow, if necessary, and keep moving. Again, the more time you spend experimenting and pruning, the less time you spend actually getting things done. Spelheim: The First Magewar

In a realm of magic, war rages. Will the continent be consumed by strife, or will the people unite against the greater danger?

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?Spelheim: The First Magewar?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

Character profile guidelines

- Try to be realistic within the setting. A thirteen-year-old stablehand won?t be a master swordsman, a beggar won?t charm his way into every brothel in town, and the blindingly beautiful Id-Heran princess won?t be good at cooking, singing, sword fighting, blacksmithing, caber tossing, NASCAR racing, and catching bloody unicorns.

- No Mary Sues. People have flaws, and the world does not revolve around them. Glance over this if you?re not certain of the term.

- Don?t create a fighting idiot.[b] This is a roleplay about countries at war. Naturally, there will be combat, but if you intend to chain endless fighting scenes together, you?re in the wrong place. You cannot trade your ability to put on pants for +1 to damage. The story will be action-driven as much as character-driven, and the war is larger than any individual action taken in it.

- [b]On magicians: It is not expected or particularly encouraged for you to play a magician. They have pretty restricted lives, and the magic system is rather rigid. The presence of magicians on both sides of the war levels the playing field, so normal fighters (or even diplomats) are perfectly capable of making a difference.

- You may omit information from your character profile if you wish to keep certain information a mystery. Secret pasts would be a good example of this. A hidden set of lock picks would not ? anything that might seem like an ass pull goes on your profile.

Notes on character skeleton

Picture and avatar: A picture is not required, but it is encouraged. Illustrations are preferred over photos. Do not spend too much time looking for one ? your text description will take precedence over anything else. Do try to find (or make) a recognizable 100x100 avatar for your character.

Name: English, Germanic or fantasy names are all allowed. It has to be pronounceable in the English tongue though. If you're a commoner, you're not going to have an overly long name. Only Spelheim citizens have a last name. Id-Herans may also state the name of their father (son of, daughter of).

Race: Sile, Kanloi, Citian Human, Id-Heran Human.

Sex: Male, female or undisclosed. In the human society, some women may impersonate men for safety or work opportunities, and spies may be in disguise.

Age: Try to be realistic, in relation to skill set and background.

Appearance: Try to avoid subjective terms in your description. Your character may be conventionally beautiful [for their race], but she may not be attractive [to everyone]. Some characters may fear beauty, and different people and races have different standards. As for racial differences: blond characters generally have Id-Heran blood, while red hair originates in Spelheim. Black hair can always be tracked back to the Socharev.

Personality: please provide a clear personality. ?She is timid but will get angry at you when you insult her enough? isn?t a personality, it?s common sense. Characters with conviction or motivation are preferred ? I?d rather not have isolated hermits that look forward to dying alone. Room for character development is encouraged. Check the other characters for any disturbing overlap in personality.

History: what made your character into the person (s)he is today? Arranging previous relationships with other characters is encouraged if appropriate. Two Citians needn?t know each other, but two dragon riders probably would.

Magic: no magic potential, latent potential, or awakened mage. If the latter, list Talents and illustrate relative proficiency. The magic academies rank their students, so magicians have a fair idea of their capabilities. Keep in mind that the City forcibly awakens all magic potential: no one in the Spelheim capital can remain latent.

Additional information: equipment, hidden scars, whatever you think is important.

Writing sample:
Write a small fragment according to this scenario:

While on a midnight stroll through a dark alley, or a forest road, your character encounters a faint silhouette. The person approaches at a relaxed pace, holding an object that might be a sword, or a walking cane, or even a tree branch. You are not sure you have been seen, but the chances are fair.

Illustrate suspicions and the appropriate action. No word minimum. This does not have to be elaborate. Hide behind a tree and you?re done. Charge the silhouette with your sword and you?re done. This is not canon, i.e. do not start your first post running from an alley.

Offsetting global warming: Targeting solar geoengineering to minimize risk and inequality

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? A new study suggests that solar geoengineering can be tailored to reduce inequality or to manage specific risks like the loss of Arctic sea ice. By tailoring geoengineering efforts by region and by need, a new model promises to maximize the effectiveness of solar radiation management while mitigating its potential side effects and risks.

Developed by a team of leading researchers, the study was published in the November issue of Nature Climate Change.

Solar geoengineering, the goal of which is to offset the global warming caused by greenhouse gases, involves reflecting sunlight back into space. By increasing the concentrations of aerosols in the stratosphere or by creating low-altitude marine clouds, the as-yet hypothetical solar geoengineering projects would scatter incoming solar heat away from Earth's surface.

Critics of geoengineering have long warned that such a global intervention would have unequal effects around the world and could result in unforeseen consequences. They argue that the potential gains may not be worth the risk.

Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Professor of Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. "Instead, we can be thoughtful about various tradeoffs to achieve more selective results, such as the trade-off between minimizing global climate changes and minimizing residual changes at the worst-off location."

The study -- developed in collaboration with Douglas G. MacMartin of the California Institute of Technology, Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution for Science, and Ben Kravitz, formerly of Carnegie and now at the Department of Energy -- explores the feasibility of using solar geoengineering to counter the loss of Arctic sea ice.

"There has been a lot of loose talk about region-specific climate modification. By contrast, our research uses a more systematic approach to understand how geoengineering might be used to limit a specific impact. We found that tailored solar geoengineering might limit Arctic sea ice loss with several times less total solar shading than would be needed in a uniform case."

Generally speaking, greenhouse gases tend to suppress precipitation, and an offsetting reduction in the amount of sunlight absorbed by Earth would not restore this precipitation. Both greenhouse gases and aerosols affect the distribution of heat and rain on this planet, but they change the temperature and precipitation in different ways in different places. The researchers suggest that varying the amount of sunlight deflected away from Earth both regionally and seasonally could combat some of this problem.

"These results indicate that varying geoengineering efforts by region and over different periods of time could potentially improve the effectiveness of solar geoengineering and reduce climate impacts in at-risk areas," says co-author Ken Caldeira, Senior Scientist in the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science.

The researchers note that while their study used a state-of-the-art model, any real-world estimates of the possible impact of solar radiation management would need to take into account various uncertainties. Further, any interference in Earth's climate system, whether intentional or unintentional, is likely to produce unanticipated outcomes.

"While more work needs to be done, we have a strong model that indicates that solar geoengineering might be used in a far more nuanced manner than the uniform one-size-fits-all implementation that is often assumed. One might say that one need not think of it as a single global thermostat. This gives us hope that if we ever do need to implement engineered solutions to combat global warming, that we would do so with a bit more confidence and a great ability to test it and control it."

First human ancestor looked like a squirrel

Newly discovered fossilized bones for the world's oldest and most primitive known primate, Purgatorius, reveal a tiny, agile animal that spent much of its time eating fruit and climbing trees, according to a study.

The fossils, described Friday in a presentation at the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology's 72nd Annual Meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina, are the first known below-the-head bones for Purgatorius. Previously, only teeth revealed its existence.

"The ankle bones show that it had a mobile ankle joint like primates today that live in trees," co-author Stephen Chester, a Yale University vertebrate paleontologist, told Discovery News. "This mobility would have allowed for rotating the foot in different directions as it adjusted to different angles presented by tree trunks and branches."

"It also shows that the first primates did not have elongate ankles that you see in many living primates today that are thought to be related to leaping behaviors," added Chester.

He conducted the study with colleagues Jonathan Bloch of the Florida Museum of Natural History and William Clemens, a professor emeritus at the University of California at Berkeley and a curator for the university's Museum of Paleontology.

After analyzing the fossils, the researchers believe that the specialized ankle bones of Purgatorius played a key role in the evolutionary success of early primates.

"These new fossils support the idea that the first 10 million years of primate evolution happened in the context of an intense period of similar diversification in flowering plants, including the ability to climb in branches and collect fruits and other products of the trees at the very beginning," Bloch told Discovery News.

While many questions remain unanswered about Purgatorius, this and other studies are shedding more light on the animal. Its name comes from Purgatory Hill in eastern Montana where it was first discovered.

NEWS: Earliest Known Human Relatives Came from Asia

Purgatorius lived during the Paleocene, shortly after the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs. Given the end of the Age of Dinosaurs, the new era began the mammal-dominated era, which we are still in.

This mammal is generally believed to have been small and brown, and had a bushy tail. The researchers liken it to another early primate, Dryomomys, for which more fossil material is available. Based on that and the newly found bones, Purgatorius weighed about 1.3 ounces, making it roughly the size of the smallest living primates: the mouse lemurs of Madagascar.

The mammal had a lot of teeth, including relatively low-crowned molars, which were specialized for eating fruit, although it probably ate other things too.

Tree living served this and other primates well, such that all but a few existing species remain at least partly arboreal. Humans are part of the rare exceptions, since our more recent ancestors left the trees some 60 million years after Purgatorius' lifetime.

John Fleagle, a professor in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University, told Discovery News that "arboreality in Purgatorius is no great surprise," given that early other mammals, such as flying lemurs and tree shrews, had hand proportions suitable for tree navigation.

NEWS: Ancestor of Sharks, Humans Had Sixth Sense

Purgatorius and similar mammals "seem to have been squirrel-like arboreal animals with large claws and often bushy tails," Fleagle said. These animals, along with tree shrews and flying lemurs, are all related to primates, he continued, but which is closest has been difficult to determine.

Genetic analyses can be used for evaluating relationships among living groups, Fleagle noted, but that is not possible for earlier animals like Purgatorius, which are known only from fossils.

Future work will hopefully reveal more information about these still enigmatic animals, but the latest finds are promising. In a separate talk today at the SVP meeting, Clemens documented the oldest occurrence yet known of Purgatorius. Those remains date to 65-66 million years ago.
