For film tech nerds the world over, this documentary about the advent of digital filmmaking and what it means for the old school film purists is an engaging must-see. Keanu Reeves narrates and interviews an impressive roster of directors, cinematographers, editors, actors, and execs through this highly technical history and many of the subjects are truly game. I think their candidness is largely due to Reeves being there. Most seem to feel really comfortable around him, which is essential to getting some of the gold that comes out of the likes of Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher in particular. Editor Anne Coates, the 86-year-old editor of such classics as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and OUT OF SIGHT (1998) brings a refreshing and surprising perspective. Just when you expect the film vs. digital argument to have lines drawn depending on age, Ms. Coates shows a delightful openness to the new technology. This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.

US hopes buoy markets despite Spain uncertainties

LONDON (AP) ? Surprise good news from the U.S. continued to shore up financial markets Tuesday despite concerns about the economic outlook of both Greece and Spain.

In what will be a busy week for U.S. economic data, investors are assessing whether the world's largest economy may be getting over its recent soft patch.

The monthly manufacturing survey from the Institute for Supply Management on Monday pointed to an improvement. Its main index rose sharply to above 50, a reading that signals growth. The index had been below 50 from June through August.

Hopes that the U.S. is back in recovery mode has helped stocks and the oil price start the new month on a relative high. The week's economic news out of the U.S. culminates Friday with the monthly nonfarm payrolls report, which often sets the market tone for a week or two after its release.

"The ISM rose above the critical 50 mark in a surprise move yesterday thus creating a jamboree of good sentiment," said Carolin Hecht, an analyst at Commerzbank.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index was up 0.1 percent at 5,827 while Germany's DAX rose 0.3 percent to 7,346. The CAC-40 in France was steady at 3,434.

Wall Street was poised for solid gains at the open too, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures 0.4 percent higher.

The U.S. economy won't be the only point of interest this week. Once again, developments in Europe have the potential to halt any rebound in sentiment.

The main worry at the moment relates to whether Spain will ask for a financial bailout amid concerns that the German government is reluctant to push a vote in its Parliament.

"It is thought that Spain is prepared to request a bailout this weekend with the EU not intent on imposing much stricter conditions than the government have already announced," said James Hughes, chief market analyst at Alpari. "The only thing that could delay this is Germany's opposition to them requesting aid when it isn't the very last resort."

In addition, investors will be closely monitoring developments in Greece as the country's government is in talks with its debt inspectors over the latest batch of austerity measures. If the inspectors refuse to sign off on the measures, Greece faces the prospect of not getting its next batch of bailout funds, a development that may lead to its exit from the euro.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding its future, the euro remains fairly solid, trading a further 0.2 percent higher Tuesday at $1.2913.

Earlier, Asian trading was subdued as markets in Hong Kong, mainland China and India were closed for public holidays.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index shed morning gains to close 0.1 percent lower at 8,786.05 but Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 1 percent to 4,433 after the country's central bank cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point in light of global growth concerns.

In the oil markets, benchmark oil for November delivery was up 35 cents to $92.83 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? Working to broaden his popularity among military veterans, Republican Mitt Romney's campaign has sent letters to election officials in Wisconsin, Mississippi and Vermont demanding that the deadline for receiving ballots from military and overseas voters be extended.

The letters sent in recent days on Romney's behalf by former U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi charge that election officials in the states missed the Sept. 22 deadline for mailing some ballots to overseas and military voters. A fourth letter was to be sent Tuesday to Michigan officials, according to Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams.

The campaign is actively monitoring state and local election officials across the country, he said.

"We want to ensure that our fighting men and women overseas have the right to vote in the time that is given under federal law," Williams said. "We're doing it across the country in both red states and blue state and battleground states."

The letter-writing effort targets election officials in presidential battleground states such as Wisconsin and Michigan, but extends into others ? Mississippi and Vermont ? that neither side expects to be competitive on Election Day. The move is part of a broader push by the Romney campaign to expand his popularity among military veterans, who tend to be older men who vote Republican, to help balance President Barack Obama's advantage among Latinos and women.

Exit polls suggest that Obama lost the veterans vote by 10 points in 2008. A Gallup Poll taken in August gave Romney a 17-point edge among the voting bloc, which makes up about 13 percent of the adult population.

In Wisconsin, 27 municipalities missed the deadline for various reasons to send ballots to a total of 44 military and overseas voters, said Reid Magney, spokesman for the state Government Accountability Board, which handles elections. All 44 ballots were sent to the affected voters within five days of the missed deadline, Magney said.

Federal law requires that ballots be sent to military and overseas voters by Sept. 22, and be returned by Nov. 9.

Williams said the Romney campaign was paying closer attention to Wisconsin because of problems election clerks had earlier this year in meeting the deadline for the presidential primary.

In March, Wisconsin election officials entered into a consent decree with the U.S. Department of Justice to extend the deadline for receiving ballots for the April 3 primary when at least 227 military and overseas ballots were mailed after the deadline.

Under that agreement, the ballots had to be postmarked by the day of the election, April 3, but the completed ballot was counted if it came in within as many days as it was sent late.

The Romney letters copied in the U.S. Department of Justice. If the department doesn't bring legal action, the campaign will consider it, Williams said.

A spokesman for the Justice Department did not immediately return an email message seeking comment.

There are 6,120 military and overseas voters in Wisconsin, Magney said. The total voting age population is about 4.38 million.

The Romney campaign sent its letter to the election commission in Hinds County, Mississippi, and to Vermont Secretary of State James Condos. The letters do not indicate, and Williams did not know, how many voters in each of those states may be affected.

Hinds County election officials have said the deadline was missed for just 13 voters but they have all since received their ballots electronically.

In the Vermont letter, Principi said 53 municipalities sent ballots late.

Condos, a Democrat who last week called the issue "a show" by the Romney campaign, said a recount in a primary race delayed the printing of the November ballots. Condos said all the late ballots had been sent to the affected voters by Tuesday.

Thanks so much and that's how I felt, since I grew up in the same town as this woman, she isn't a personal friend but we have many of the same friends, she knew when she met him we were a couple. If he has been talking to her as a friend okay but why act like you don't know me when you use to speak all the time. Plus if he had an affair when we were split why is that your business and why point it out to me if you unless you wanted to start trouble...I really haven't discussed this with him cause he's ill, but when I do I feel he needs to tell her in front of me that she crossed the line in their friendship.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Torii Hunter and the Los Angeles Angels are still trying to make up for their horrendous start to the season that put them in an early hole.

With only four games left, the Angels still have a chance to get into the playoffs.

Hunter hit a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday, when the Angels rallied off closer Joe Nathan and got past the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 5-4 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

"I'm hungry. I'm about winning. When it gets close like this and in the postseason, I simplify things," Hunter said. "You worry about the task at hand. Win this game. You don't talk about winning three games. Now we've got to put our focus into the next day. Well, I guess today it's on the next game coming up."

The Angels, who after adding slugger Albert Pujols and left-hander C.J. Wilson last winter went 8-15 in April, have won 11 of their last 15 games. Their 26-10 record since Aug. 21 is the best in the American League.

Los Angeles (88-70) is 2 1/2 games behind Oakland (91-68) for the AL's second wild card after the A's won 5-2 at home to Seattle on Sunday.

Texas (92-66) saw its division lead over the A's cut to 1 1/2 games with four to play. The Rangers finish the regular season with three games at Oakland, starting Monday.

Hunter's double into the left-center gap came right after Nathan (3-5) struck out Mike Trout, who earlier in the game became the first major league rookie with 30 homers and 40 stolen bases in the same season.

It was only the third blown save in 39 chances for Nathan, who put his hands on his head while looking down in disgust as Hunter's ball rolled to the wall. In the dugout after the inning, Nathan covered his face with a towel.

"No doubt that's the biggest hit of our season," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

"Bad pitch at the wrong time," Nathan said. "He's a good player, going to get you sometime. Unfortunately, it was during a big spot."

With the loss, the Rangers won't have an opportunity at home to clinch their third consecutive AL West title. The Rangers would assure a playoff berth with a victory against the Angels on Sunday night.

"Well, we've got another game," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "I'm glad we don't have to wait too long."

There was about a 2 1/2-hour gap before the second game, when left-hander Derek Holland (11-6) was set to pitch for Texas against right-hander Ervin Santana (9-12). That was the scheduled matchup for Saturday's game, which was called off four hours after its scheduled start because of rain.

Los Angeles trailed 4-3 in the ninth before a one-out single by Maicer Izturis, retired on a reversed call two innings earlier. Nathan walked Chris Iannetta before Trout struck out to bring up Hunter.

Garrett Richards (4-3) retired Nelson Cruz with two runners on in the eighth, and Ernesto Frieri pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 26 chances.

That wasn't what the Orioles and their fans wanted to see while watching the Rangers game on the scoreboard in center field in Baltimore. An Angels' loss would have clinched the Orioles' first postseason berth since 1997.

Yu Darvish struck out seven in 6 2-3 innings but came out after Trout's homer, which trimmed the lead to 4-3, and Hunter's double.

Alexi Ogando relieved and induced an inning-ending grounder on a full-count pitch to Pujols, who already had two singles. With primary setup man Mike Adams injured, Ogando stayed on for the eighth.

Cruz hit his 24th homer for Texas, a two-run shot in the second, an inning after the right fielder threw out Trout on the bases.

Trout started the game with a walk and quickly got his 48th stolen base. His 30th homer, a solo shot to straightaway center, came on the first pitch Darvish threw him in the seventh.

After the stolen base in the first, Trout tried to advance on Hunter's flyball to right. But Cruz threw a one-hop strike to third baseman Adrian Beltre to retire Trout, who slid head-first into the same side of the base where Beltre was.

Izturis led off the seventh with a weakly hit ball that dropped between the mound and first base. Mitch Moreland fielded the ball, and tossed to Darvish, who made the catch, tagged the base and showed the ball to umpire Mark Wegner, who signaled safe.

Washington charged out of the dugout to argue, but umpires huddled and called Izturis out, bringing out Scioscia. Two batters later, Trout homered.

Trout had the first of three consecutive two-out singles in the third and scored on Pujols' hit.

Elvis Andrus drew a two-out walk in the third and scored on Josh Hamilton's single that snapped the slugger's 0-for-17 career mark against Zack Greinke. Beltre hit a popup to shallow right field that Hunter never saw, and it dropped for an RBI double and a 4-1 lead.

"You face a Greinke, you're going to be fortunate you got four runs," Washington said. "He had good stuff out there today. We got four runs on him and it was enough to get us into the ninth inning with the lead, we just didn't shut it down."

NOTES: The 21-year-old Trout is the youngest player with a 30-30 season. He needs two stolen bases to become only the third player ever with 30 homers and 50 stolen bases. The others? Eric Davis (1987) and Barry Bonds (1990). ... Hamilton, who struck out three times, has 126 RBIs. ... There were no weather issues Sunday for the first-ever split doubleheader at Rangers Ballpark.
