Bro Cave: @MurrayBateman | Keyboard + Mouse or Die

This week?s bro cave comes to us from Murray a.k.a. eSTeeM, who hails from the historic county of Lincolnshire, England. Not only does he have a sweet gaming setup, but he also has a great story about his love for PC gaming, which has ultimately led him to study computer game design at his university!

?

Gather ye round children, for I hath a tale. It all starts in 1991; my mother gives birth to a baby, not knowing he is soon to become obsessed by all things technological. I think if she had known then what she knows now, I?d have been swapped in the hospital when no one was looking, and my parents would be about a million pounds richer with the money they would have saved from electricity bills.

In fact, what am I saying? It?s my parents? damn fault. They went and bought me a Sega Mega Drive, along with the ridiculously addictive games that Sega had to offer. So yeah, #BlameParents, #BlameSega, #BlameEarthWormJim and #BlameSonic. Not that I?m resentful by any means. I love everything gaming, and I am so glad that I?m not one of those guys that looks down their nose at cave dwellers because they don?t appreciate the beauty of our world. Where was I? Oh, yeah, Sega. So that little blue hedgehog stole months of my life. I?d wake up at 7am and play all the way through to 10pm?the lack of a saving option wasn?t going to stop me (in fact, saving just made it worse).

Playstation 1 next, and the million-disc Final Fantasy games were the sponges that soaked up my hours. Of course, the standard incredible PS1 games were also in my library: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, and more. The story is much the same with the second-gen Playstation: school all day, games all night at volume level 5 on my TV so my parents wouldn?t hear.

Then, in 2007, something incredible happened. It was called Counter-Strike: Source. My life changed. I had the worst home PC in the world, produced by tech geniuses at Dell, and the 30fps, although fantastical, just didn?t suffice? so a year later, I decided to build. Cut away to one of those scenes with me in trousers, an apron, and a welding mask, sweating, illuminated by hot coals and smashing hot iron on an anvil.

The result was a speed demon with a Q6600 and 9800 GTX+ that just guzzled up everything CS had to offer. Over the years that followed, my love for PC gaming only grew. Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, Battlefield, Quake? the list goes on. Yeah, it?s almost entirely FPS, but when you have the attention span of a gnat, fast-paced FPS games really do it for you. That said, I would play everything at least once, so more and more of my life went into the PC, rather than the PS3 I had since bought.

Over the last 4 years, I have been updating and amending my build constantly, and in January of this year, once I had confirmed my place at Uni on a 4-year Computer Games Design course, I decided to opt for a major overhaul to future-proof it.

For those who love to talk specs, great, ?cause so do I!

Console: PS3 Slim 320GB
TV: 42? Panasonic Viera TX-P42S20B 1920?1080

By the way, I know about the cable management, but as I said, I change the parts in my PC so often it?s not worth spending hours slaving over making it look good. However, as I?m not planning on updating it any time soon, I may opt for a complete disassemble and rebuild over the holidays.

And here?s a closer picture of my desktop setup at my Uni digs:

So this is where I am at right now. I am so happy that I got, first and foremost, into gaming itself, but especially PC gaming. PC gaming is the reason I am now studying Computer Games Design at University, and I?m loving every second of it.

I thank the stars that there is a place like this where people can come and help the community thrive and grow, so thanks again KBMOD, and thanks to you who has just read this. I hope it was as enjoyable reading it as it was writing it. Now, get to your PC and get gaming!

Study: Like a tree, growth rings show lobster age

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? For the first time, scientists have figured out how to determine the age of a lobster ? by counting its rings, like a tree.

Nobody knows how old lobsters can live to be; some people estimate they live to more than 100.

But knowing ? rather than simply guessing ? their age and that of other shellfish could help scientists better understand the population and assist regulators of the lucrative industry, said Raouf Kilada, a research associate at the University of New Brunswick who was the lead author of a scientific paper documenting the process.

Before now, scientists deduced a lobster's age judging by size and other variables. But it's now known that lobsters and other crustaceans, such as crabs and shrimp, grow one ring per year in hidden-away internal spots, Kilada said.

"Having the age information for any commercial species will definitely improve the stock assessment and ensure sustainability," he said after presenting his findings Thursday at a scientific conference in Portland.

Scientists already could tell a fish's age by counting the growth rings found in a bony part of its inner ear, a shark's age from the rings in its vertebrae and a scallop or clam's age from the rings of its shell.

But crustaceans posed a problem because of the apparent absence of any permanent growth structures. It was thought that when lobsters and other crustaceans molt, they shed all calcified body parts that might record annual growth bands.

For their research, Kilada and five other Canadian researchers took a closer look at lobsters, snow crabs, northern shrimp and sculptured shrimp.

They found that growth rings, in fact, could be found in the eyestalk ? a stalk connected to the body with an eyeball on the end ? of lobsters, crabs and shrimp. In lobsters and crabs, the rings were also found in the so-called "gastric mills," parts of the stomach with three teeth-like structures used to grind up food.

To find the growth bands, the scientists dissected the eyestalks and the gastric mills, cut out sections and viewed them under microscopes.

Lobsters don't lose reproductive capabilities or organ functions or exhibit signs of aging as they get older, but nobody knows for sure how old they can live to be.

"We've thought lobsters could live to 100 years old, and this new aging technique will be a way to document that," said Bob Bayer, executive director of the University of Maine's Lobster Institute.

The paper was published in this month's Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, a well-regarded peer-reviewed scientific journal based in Ottawa, Ontario, that has been published since 1901. Kilada's was one of more than 50 scientific presentations at the conference, attended by more than 100 lobster scientists from the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Bayer agreed that this is the first time scientists have a direct method to place an age on crustaceans.

"Right now we're just guessing at their age," he said.

Kilada said he saw lobster specimens that were 16 or 17 years old during his research. He estimates that there are lobsters 60 or 70 years old living in the wild.

Susan Waddy, a lobster researcher with Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said she has kept lobsters in her laboratory that are more than 30 years old. She suspects they live to be 40 or 50.

"We know they don't live forever," she said.

Why Obama is standing with Egypt's President Morsi

The Obama administration ? as the US did for years with Hozni Mubarak ? wants to separate President Mohammed Morsi's domestic political maneuvers from his role as a Middle East mediator. The US needs Morsi as a peace broker between Hamas and Israel.?

The United States has been here before, praising an Egyptian leader for championing Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts while expressing concern over his commitment to democracy at home. But with options limited, the Obama administration is keeping its faith in President Mohammed Morsi.

In a hectic week of Mideast unrest, Morsi emerged as America's key partner in working toward peace between the Jewish state and the Hamas leaders of the Gaza Strip, assuming a leadership role left vacant since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's ouster nearly two years ago.

After winning U.S. and worldwide praise, Morsi immediately cashed in on his new political capital by seizing more power at home.

His actions are the latest reminder that Washington can't be sure where its relationship will stand with the Arab world's most populous country as it transitions from decades of secular autocracy. It's moving to a more democratic government, but one that is less pro-American than its predecessors.

RECOMMENDED: How well do you know the Middle East? Take the quiz

For now, the U.S. ? as it did for years with Mubarak ? wants to separate Morsi's domestic political maneuvers from his role as a Middle East mediator.

"We believe firmly that this needs to be resolved internally as part of a transition to democracy," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said of Morsi's new decrees, which place him above any kind of oversight, including that of the courts.

After dropping its allegiance to Mubarak in February 2011, the United States had hoped to create a new, more sustainable Egyptian alliance, structured on the legitimacy of a truly representative government. To get there, it had to work with a recalcitrant military leadership unsure about handing over power to popularly elected Islamists. It is now left trying to persuade Morsi, a former member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to settle disputes with his opponents through negotiations.

But the U.S. isn't sure how hard to push, given the tangible if halting progress toward democracy Morsi has made. And it doesn't want to undercut the Egyptian leader after he challenged hardliners in his own country by committing to monitor weapon flows to Gaza and shepherd the fragile peace he secured between Hamas and Israel last week.

"Anytime you need a leader for external promises, the quid pro quo ? admitted or not ? is to back off on criticism of their domestic standing," said Andrew Tabler, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "It's a foreign policy tightrope the Obama administration is going to have to learn how to walk."

The U.S. reaction is being closely watched internationally. Washington has a long history of making light criticism of Mubarak's human rights abuses at home while helping prop up his government with tens of billions of dollars in mainly military assistance.

Morsi last week granted himself near autocratic powers at least until a new constitution is adopted and parliamentary elections are held ? a timeline that stretches to mid-2013. The Egyptian president says the moves are necessary to protect last year's revolution.

But the opposition says the moves neutralize the judiciary at a time when Morsi already holds executive and legislative powers. And in a show of opposition strength, more than 200,000 people flocked to Cairo's central Tahrir square on Tuesday, chanting against Morsi. "The people want to bring down the regime," they shouted.

Cancer research sparks cover story | News Center | Wake Forest ...

The work of a team of Wake Forest researchers developing a novel drug for prostate cancer treatment is featured on the cover of the Nov. 26 issue of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

George Kulik, an associate professor of cancer biology, Mark Welker, the William L. Poteat Professor of Chemistry, and Freddie Salsbury, an associate professor of physics, led an interdisciplinary team with expertise in computational physics, synthetic chemistry and cancer biology.

All cells, both normal and diseased, rely on the PI3K cell signaling pathway for growth, so inhibiting the pathway selectively for cancer cells has long been a challenge for scientists in the fight against cancer. While turning PI3K inhibitors loose in the body would prevent the spread of cancer, doing so would also inhibit growth in lots of cells.

To effectively use this strategy in the treatment of cancer, the Wake Forest team had to target these inhibitors to specific kinds of cells. Using prostate cells as the target, they selected a protein that is specifically recognized by prostate cells and attach that protein to a PI3K inhibitor.

Mark Welker

Welker

?Most men over 50 are familiar with PSA, or prostate specific antigen, since elevated levels of that enzyme are markers for prostate cancer,? said Welker. ?We made a cell growth inhibitor that had the PSA recognized protein sequence added to it. The idea was that this compound itself would be nontoxic, but when PSA split the inhibitor from the protein sequence, that would release the cell growth inhibitor onto the prostate cells.?

The concept has been proven to work in cells ? good news, considering one in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.

Prostate cancer cells treated with the cell growth inhibitor plus PSA recognized sequence died, while breast cancer cells, by contrast, were unaffected by it.

Freddie Salsbury

Salsbury

?Given that prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, this research could signal a major breakthrough,? said Salsbury.

While these cell studies show promise in the treatment of prostate cancer, the team is awaiting grant funding to conduct pre-clinical trials.

How aggressive hyena moms give their kids a boost

While picking at the bones of a hippo carcass, one hyena takes a quick break to attack another.

While picking at the bones of a hippo carcass, one hyena takes a quick break to attack another.

Early one morning I caught sight of Morpheus, silhouetted against a pink African dawn. Her long, sloping neck was stretched out as she loped away from me, disappearing over a hill. I followed her to a nearby plain and was met with the unmistakable sound of a group of hyenas squabbling over a carcass. Morpheus entered the fray, first lunging at a smaller male on her right. A moment later, she looked up briefly, her nose and mouth covered in blood, then turned and snapped at a hyena feeding nearby.

I?m intimately acquainted with Morpheus and these other hyenas because they have been studied for more than twenty years by various members of the lab where I did my Ph.D. research; I?ve staked these hyenas out at dens for hours on end and followed them as they raced across open plains. From watching these animals, we?ve learned about hyenas? social system, their physiology, and the conservation challenges they face.

But to me, it?s the aggression that is the most fascinating thing about hyenas. It?s rule-based and constrained by specific social norms, but at the same time, it?s incredibly primal and ruthless. Studying aggression has helped us understand what makes hyenas tick, offering us a glimpse into the evolutionary pressures that have made them one of the most unusual and misunderstood species in the animal kingdom.

Formidable females

For more than 1000 years, people believed that hyenas were hermaphrodites, since female hyenas have long, fully-erectile pseudopenises that mimic male genitalia. Seeing a hyena play the role of mom while sporting what looks like a penis would bewilder even an astute naturalist. Not only do female hyenas look like males, they are also the more aggressive and socially dominant sex, exhibiting aggression more than three times more often than male hyenas do.

For many animals, too much aggression is detrimental, at least in terms of reproductive success; in baboons, aggressive females have reduced fertility and increased rates of miscarriage , and in western bluebirds, overly-aggressive males tend to fledge fewer offspring than other males. But in these species, males are generally more aggressive than females; how is aggressiveness related to fitness in a species where females are the more aggressive sex?

Life in the clan

Three young hyenas gang up in an aggressive coalition against a low-ranking female.

Three young hyenas gang up in an aggressive coalition against a low-ranking female.

Hyenas live in huge social groups called clans that are structured by a ?linear dominance hierarchy.? That?s the scientific way of saying that in these societies, a high-ranking individual is dominant to every lower-ranking animal in the clan: Morpheus is dominant to Scrabble, who is dominant to Hendrix, and so on. For hyenas, social rank isn?t just a title or a badge of honor. Rank determines access to food, so a high-ranking hyena like Morpheus can drive a lower-ranking hyena off a kill at any time, no matter who hunted or scavenged the meat.

Social rank also plays an important role in aggressive behavior among hyenas, since dominance determines who can exhibit aggression toward whom. Aggression is nearly always directed down the hierarchy, toward lower-ranking hyenas (and if a hyena disregards this rule, it?s not taken lightly by other clan members). This means that the highest-ranking hyenas have a lot of opportunities for aggression ? they can attack nearly any other hyena in the clan ? whereas lower-ranking hyenas have far fewer possible targets. Aggression can occur over food, in defense of cubs, or to reprimand a pesky suitor.

But unlike many species, aggression doesn?t dictate social rank among hyenas; instead, social rank is inherited. Hyenas are stuck with their lot in life, unable to move up the hierarchy. So does all this aggression actually benefit hyenas, and if so, how?

The implications of aggression

Aggressiveness, it turns out, varies drastically among hyenas; some hyenas tend to threaten ? or outright attack ? group members more frequently than others do. There is more than a five-fold difference in the aggression rates of the least aggressive and the most aggressive females, even after controlling for social rank and the number of opportunities for aggression.

This type of consistent variation in behavior, called ?animal personality,? is being found in several traits, such as sociability, boldness, and docility, across many species. And aggressiveness, like other personality traits, can have major implications for fitness. However, for hyenas, aggression doesn?t affect fitness by improving a hyena?s own survival; aggressive females don?t live longer or survive at higher rates than others that attack less often.

Instead, the benefits of aggressiveness are seen later down the line, in the survival of offspring. Female hyenas that are particularly aggressive over food successfully rear a larger proportion of their cubs to adulthood than do females that aggress less often over food. But interestingly, the benefits of aggressiveness depend on social rank. For high-ranking hyenas, aggressiveness doesn?t matter much in terms of reproductive success; the offspring of dominant females do well no matter how aggressive their mom is. However, for hyenas low on the totem pole, aggression plays an important role in reproductive success, greatly improving their offspring?s odds of surviving until adulthood. But how?

Competition and reputations

It all comes down to acquiring resources for your offspring. High-ranking hyenas already have prime access to food, so being super-aggressive at a kill or carcass isn?t a huge advantage. However, for hyenas low on the totem pole, being able to secure a little extra food for a cub could mean the difference between its survival and starvation.

A hyena cub snuggles with its mother at the den.

A hyena cub snuggles with its mother at the den.

When cubs begin eating meat at around 4 months of age, they start visiting kills with their moms. But as these cubs attempt to eat, they are often harassed by older hyenas and chased off the carcass. Additionally, these young hyenas have another disadvantage when it comes to feeding: their skulls haven?t finished developing yet. Although being able to crush bone is a big benefit for hyenas evolutionarily, it?s a huge morphological handicap for cubs. It takes up to 35 months for a hyena?s skull to develop the integrity and strength to crack bone, so until about three years of age, young hyenas feed more slowly and less efficiently than adults. Combine this physical disadvantage with the incredible feeding competition seen at kills, and cubs ? especially low-ranking ones ? often don?t get much to eat during these communal feeding situations.

Here?s where a mom?s aggressiveness comes in: we found that the cubs of aggressive females are tolerated better, and are able to feed longer, at these kills than the cubs of less aggressive females are. By being super-aggressive, moms secure extra feeding time and valuable calories for their cubs during this particularly handicapped period in their lives. Although we don?t completely understand the process yet, aggressive females appear to develop a type of ?mean girl? reputation within the clan that gives their offspring a boost early in life. This effect is incredibly strong and persists even when the mom isn?t present at the kill, allowing cubs to benefit from their mom?s aggressiveness even in her absence. This increased access to resources benefits low-ranking hyenas disproportionately, since they generally have very limited access to food.

A combination of behavioral, morphological, and ecological research has helped us begin to understand why these highly aggressive and masculinized females have been favored evolutionarily. But even after 20 years of intensive research, there?s so much more to learn; we still aren?t sure what the functions and implications of male aggression are, and it?s possible that there are consequences of aggression in females that we haven?t yet discovered.

Morpheus and her clanmates are still being observed, and you can follow the trials, tribulations, and musings of the researchers studying these hyenas out in the field at the Mara Hyena Project blog.

Nanotech 'second skin' could protect soldiers from chemical threats

13 hrs.

Advances in nanotech have allowed research into materials that actively detect and shut out harmful molecules, or even shed layers like real skin. It?could be a lifesaver for soldiers and emergency workers.

A soldier in the field has lots of protection: A helmet, flak jacket, armored panels and so on. But when it comes to chemical and biological warfare, that equipment is virtually useless. Gases and bacteria can penetrate or simply cling to soldier's garments and gear, wreaking havoc later despite being highly diffuse.

The risk can't be mitigated entirely, but polymer scientists at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are working on a "second skin" made of?smart materials that would be a far more effective and sophisticated defense than we have now.

They call the fabric they're working on a "hybrid functional material," and it's made of a combination of carbon nanotubes and specially?designed nanoparticles. It's designed not just to block out unwanted agents, like poisonous gas molecules and spores, but to be normally breathable as well in less dangerous situations.

At a molecular level, the nanotubes are aligned vertically and arranged to form pores just a few nanometers wide. While ordinary air can pass through these tiny "nanopores," larger molecules and organisms like viruses simply don't fit.

There are smaller threats, however: Nerve agents and mustard gas would go right through even such tiny gaps. The nanomaterial?membrane?would be coated with "responsive functional groups," special molecules designed to respond to the presence of such deadly toxins. Activated molecules would trigger the nanopores to shut completely.

Lastly, in the case of agents that tend to stick around instead of diffusing, such as anthrax, the material will be designed to slough them?off, mimicking human skin. That way a garment exposed to infection wouldn't bring it back to, or out of, a hospital or base.

The leader of the research team is LLNL's Franceso Fornasiero, who is working closely with UMA's Kenneth Carter and James Watkins and others. They've just received a $1.8 million five-year grant to research how to manufacture these nanomaterials in bulk, and they estimate that new nano-uniforms could be in the field within 10 years.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC?News Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Nokia Lumia 822 review the pride of Espoo returns to Verizon Wireless

Three years. That's how long it's been since Nokia has offered a phone for the largest carrier in the US: a unique (and yet wholly forgettable) device known as the Twist. Needless to say, the arrival of the Lumia 822 at Verizon Wireless comes at a crucial time for Nokia, which must quickly establish itself in the United States if it hopes to remain a legitimate contender in the smartphone realm. That's a lot of weight to carry on one's shoulders -- even for a mighty Finn.

Fortunately, the Lumia 822 is well-suited to help establish a beachhead on Lady Liberty's shores. At just $100 on-contract, it's a good value and deserves genuine consideration from OS switchers and first-time smartphone buyers alike. Granted, it lacks the premium display and camera wizardry of the Lumia 920, but with greater built-in storage and a better front-facing camera, it narrowly bests the Lumia 820 for AT&T and the Lumia 810 for T-Mobile. Add to that Data Sense -- a new data monitoring and compression feature of Windows Phone 8, but currently exclusive to Verizon -- and the Lumia 822 easily becomes the most compelling of Nokia's mid-range Windows Phone lineup. Even if its design is a bit... bland.

Unbearable Betrayal

Emily Yoffe, aka Dear Prudence, is on Washingtonpost.com weekly to chat live with readers. An edited?transcript of the chat is below. (Sign up here?to get Dear Prudence delivered to your inbox each week. Read Prudie?s?Slate columns?here. Send questions to Prudence at prudence@slate.com.)

Emily Yoffe: Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving. This weekend I went to the stores and did my part for the economy. So much so that my card was declined when I was buying socks. A call to the credit card company had them explaining to me they became suspicious because I appeared to be "in a frenzy."

Q. Is It Time To Get Over It?: When my ex and I were married, we had trouble conceiving and years of heartache. I thought our marriage was strong enough to survive this, then I discovered he was having an affair with my sister. We had a huge, traumatic confrontation and my then husband and I decided to move and make a fresh start. A few weeks after we moved, my sister gave the news that?surprise!?she was pregnant. My ex then divorced me to start a family with her. Because I'd just started a new job and had a mortgage, it was financially impossible for me to leave. I stayed in the new city by myself and eventually made friends and settled there. My parents were also very hurt and angry, but when the baby came they mellowed and reconciled. My niece is now 5 and I have never met her. We take turns attending family functions because I can't bear to be in the same room as them. Recently my parents gently asked if I would consider having a Christmas dinner with my sister. I told them I would think about it and I really did. I took a deep breath and went on my sister's Facebook page for the first time. There, I saw hundreds of happy pictures of them as a family. My ex-husband kissing her after she'd just given birth, photos of the happy first birthday party, family trips, etc. She was tagged in a status update from my ex: "Celebrating another amazing anniversary with my beautiful wife, thank you for giving me so much happiness and our perfect daughter." I literally vomited after reading that. After five years, is it time for me to get over it and try to force myself to at least tolerate their company?

A: It's no wonder what you saw made you sick to your stomach. The violation against you was enormous. However, I don't think you should conclude that the only way you could be with them is to have a bunch of air-sickness bags with you. You have been in a bubble of denial for the past five years, so a tidal wave of evidence of the happy family life you feel these cheaters stole from you is bound to be overwhelming. If over the past few years you'd had some minimal contact with them and knew your niece slightly, you would be in a different place emotionally now. Yes, you might have still concluded you want nothing to do with them, but you would have make that decision from a more rational place. So give yourself time. You may want, possibly with the help of a therapist or even a friend, to give yourself some desensitization therapy. Instead of consuming pictures of the past five years at one gulp, over the next few months you could look occasionally at pictures of your niece. She is the innocent party here, and focusing on her might enable you to see that painful as it is, something positive has come out of all this. But Christmas is too soon for this. If you are going to find yourself being able to be in the room with this reconstituted family, it would be better to do it at a less loaded time?say a weekend in February with no connotations of holiday joy. Whatever you decide vis-a-vis your sister, be proud that you have moved on and built a happy life for yourself. (And how often do brothers- and sisters-in-law get it on? Just a few weeks ago I got a letter from a woman whose fianc? impregnated his brother's wife, but the brother remains none the wiser.)

Q. Sister-in-Law's Hospitality: My brother and sister-in-law invited our family and four other families over for Thanksgiving this weekend. We all brought side dishes, wine, desserts, and drinks so that they only needed to cook the turkey. When the meal was done, my sister-in-law came up to me and asked me to make sure to leave a check before we left. I asked her what the check was for and she said it was for hosting the dinner. She said $100 per couple should cover it. I was floored. The turkey only cost about $30 and everyone else bought at least as much in side dishes and wine. She told me there are a lot of costs that guests just don't see. In order to avoid a scene, I wrote her a check. (I know at least one other family reluctantly paid her as well.) I asked my brother what that was about and he didn't know anything about it. $500 to cook a turkey and host a dinner seems a bit steep to me?what should we do?

A. You should make other plans for Christmas if this chisler has invited you to celebrate that holiday. If you normally exchange gifts with them, consider that $100 for breast meat to be sufficient for the season. It's true there are hidden costs to hospitality, but invited guests are normally not expected to cover that month's mortgage. Your sister-in-law is a nut, and if you're ever invited for another gathering, tell her you'll supply your own peanut butter and jelly.

Q. Am I Too Prudish?: I am about to relocate to another state. My brother and his wife live in our soon to be home town and have generously offered me and my family a room until we find our own place. However, they have large nude portraits of themselves?one of my brother and another one of my SIL?hanging in the main hallway. They are not posing in any sexually suggestive way, but you see everything. Last time we visited my son was a toddler and the pictures weren't an issue. He is now 5 and I feel it's inappropriate for him to see nude portraits of his aunt and uncle. Is it rude if I ask them to take down the pictures? I'm all for giving kids age-appropriate sex ed, but I fear this is just too much too soon.

A: This isn't sex ed, it's art appreciation. You simply can't ask your brother and sister-in-law to cover their portraits the way former Attorney General John Ashcroft had the partially nude Spirit of Justice covered with drapes. Your son will likely take a cue from you, so if you don't take notice of the paintings he might not even focus on them. But if you find him staring, fascinated, then open the discussion by saying, "Those are interesting paintings, aren't they?" And whatever he says handle it with humorous aplomb. Keep in mind there's no age at which it's too soon for a kid to understand that everyone is naked under their clothes.

Q. Confused in Ariz.: It has recently been brought to my attention that my 35-year-old son is being accused of sexually molesting the son of my best friend. At the time their ages were 13 (my son) and 4 (her son). I am shocked and shaken but at the same time I believe my son who says it is not true. My best friend is upset as well and wants my son to admit it and apologize. Prudence, I am at a loss of what to do. I feel as if a 40-year friendship is going to end. Both families just found out about it as my godson just told his mother. We are all trying to deal with this. My daughter says we should all get the proper counseling if needed and move on with our separate lives. She says nothing can be done legally since my son denies it anyway. I am terrified of what might can happen and mourn a potentially lost valued friendship?

A: I think your daughter is right. This is a situation in which the truth may never be known (and the statutes of limitations has run on the potential crime). If your son absolutely denies the accusation, of course he's not going to apologize. And your friend seems naive to think that an apology would wrap things up and the friendship could continue. What a devastating turn of events; talking it through with a neutral party can help you deal with the fallout.

Get PAID To Speak For Free! ? 12 Ways to Get Compensated For ...

Great speakers can still make money when speaking for free!In part 2 of this 3-part series, Bryan Caplovitz from SpeakerMatch, shares four more excellent tips for getting paid while speaking for free?

5. Use business cards to your advantage.

Almost everyone has a business card, so how can you use yours to help gain publicity? When accepting an engagement for free, tell the planner that you will do so under the condition that they place a business card on every seat in the room. That way, when people sit down and listen to you speak, and like you (I am assuming you are good at what you do?otherwise you wouldn?t be reading this), they can pick up your card and keep it with them for the future.

Next time these people need a speaker or know someone who needs a speaker, guess whose business card they have without ever meeting you one-on-one? That?s right ? they have all your contact information in their Rolodex, which will hopefully lead to more engagements and money for YOU in the future.

6. Use your audience as a source for leads.

When other people say you?re good, it means about 2000% more than you saying you?re great.

If you are looking to increase your speaking engagements, one of the most popular ways of doing so is through networking and word of mouth.

Asking friends or others if they know of anyone who requires an engagement speaker can be quite tedious and boring. So next time you are giving a speech for ?free,? use the audience to help give you referrals.

The first thing to do is to let the audience know that you are doing this pro-bono. When they hear this, they will wonder why you would be willing to do such a thing. Explain to the audience that you have an evaluation that you would appreciate them filling out. In the evaluation form (which could be placed on every seat, or handed out upon entrance/exit to the venue), ask them to rate you as a speaker.

Many people will be willing to give you constructive feedback on your presentation. Once you have people drawn into your survey, include a question regarding whether they know of anyone looking for speakers. It also helps if you can promise a reward for any referrals that lead to more business.

In addition to the referral section, include a section for people to sign up for your internet newsletter or online e-zine, in which you will keep them up-to-date with your speaking engagements and booking opportunities.

NOTE: When getting referrals, ask for names, phone numbers, and mailing addresses. DO NOT even bother asking for e-mail addresses or fax numbers The last thing you need is to be accused of sending spam or unsolicited faxes. These practices can really tarnish your reputation. Once you have an existing relationship, and obtain permission, e-mail and fax are great communications tools.

7. Don?t give out notes.

When you are speaking, do not print handouts or notes of any type for the engagements.? Let people know that they are more than welcome to take their own notes throughout the duration of the speech, but also make the notes available on your website, and encourage them to visit your site.

Hopefully people will go home, get on the internet, and start visiting your site.? This is a great way to keep yourself differentiated from other speakers and build a fan base.

To encourage visitors, DO offer a promotional item with your contact information to every attendee. Pens and pads are fine, and pretty standard; this is a great place to be really creative. Use your imagination to come up with something that people will want to keep on their desks. Even better, come up with something they?ll want to show to others.

One speaker I know gives out small mirrors with her contact information printed on the plastic frame. The frames are designed to attach easily to cubicle walls. Because she works with customer service professionals who spend their days in a cubicle, these are a big hit. Her message, that ?people can actually hear your smile over the phone? makes her gift especially purposeful as well.

8. Sell your products and services before, during, and after the speech.

This one probably doesn?t even need to be on the list, but some new speakers fail to understand that speaking is always about selling. Speak for free, sure, but let your audience know that you are more than a speaker.

You don?t need to do a hard sell. I don?t even think you need a soft sell. But you should clearly communicate that you are an expert, and make it clear that you earn money in ways other than speaking.

No matter what you speak on, you should have a consulting fee. If someone wants to get your professional advice, be prepared to offer it ? for a fee! I?m not saying that you shouldn?t answer questions for free, but there?s nothing wrong with working out a day of consulting.

If you do have resources that can be purchased at the back of the room, make sure to ask for permission from the venue coordinator before you make a sales pitch. Any kind of audio or data CD, resource kit, or even a DVD of previous speeches (that can be recorded for free? refer to tip #1) can be sold.

Some items cost pennies to reproduce and can often be sold for hundreds of dollars? that is almost pure profit!!!

Social Networking Sites : Merits and Demerits Of Relationships

A relationship is the interaction or bond between two or more things, people, animals or places.?A new research study appraises facets of relationships crafted in social networking sites to determine their importance, profundity and potentials.? Sites such as Facebook pinterest and Twitter have revolutionized relationships to e-relationships in this digital era. In this mounting tempo of social networking sites, users share relationship status, emotional feelings, pictures and videos that depict their personality with an ever-growing list of online friends.

Nancy Baym, professor of communication studies at the University of kansas, in research on social networking sites states, ?They start in the mid-late 1990s based on this idea that Stanley Milgram had that everybody?s connected by six degrees of separation ? and the first one was actually called ?sixdegrees.com,? ?

?And they?re based on the premise that you?re more likely to want to get to know people who know people you already know than all-out strangers. So rather than a dating site that just has people putting up profiles and trying to randomly match, what if you could put up profiles of people that had shared friends. Wouldn?t those be more likely to succeed??

Baym recently has completed research on Last.fm, a site that connects fans of similar music. She found that online friendships were formed on common flavor in music and the profundities of these relations were very weak. However, people also used the site to maintain closer relationships.

?What I found on Last.fm was that on average these relationships are not very strong,? said Baym.

Despite, lawyers in US claim that the social networking sites played primary roles in many divorces and custody conflicts. Now social networking sites are blamed for the undermining relationships and marriages.

Another study by Jennine Estes, a licensed marriage and family counselor living in San Diego, ?says that she comes across clients who share how Facebook was involved in some part of their relationship.? Some stated that they used Facebook when they felt insecure in the relationship to investigate their partner?s activity with others, searching for signs that the relationship is off-track, or looking for inappropriate comments.?Other clients have stated that they watch their partner?s (or soon to be partner) relationship status as a sign of whether their relationship is in tack, broken-up, or in the works. The list is endless!

Keeping in mind, all these endless lists of problems, here is a way how to keep social media at bay from your relationships:

  • The use of ?social media can magnify the insecurities, if you?re already dealing with jealousy-syndrome, if you are feeling insecure, its better you and your partner should delete your social media accounts. Even a sentence post or new friendship can be misunderstood by your partner.
  • Do not assume?Posts or comments by your partner, friends, or colleagues depict their personalities or the world they reside in. assumptions can be biggest threats in relationships. As we cannot judge a person without knowing them in person.
  • More clearer you?re, lesser the chances of getting ?a cord of spark in your relationship. So be clear when you are posting something and check if it is conveying the message you really wanted to give.
  • Post safer topics, without giving an eye for suspect.
  • Don?t air your worries misunderstandings or feelings related to your relationships.
  • Include your partner in your account, either posting pictures of both or by creating a joint account. Be comfortable using ?account even when your partner is around or sits next to you.
  • If you feel your relationships are hindering by your addiction to social networks, just make sure you use it minimal.
  • Sometimes people just cross their limits by commenting or posting in an inappropriate or flirty way, which may hurt your partner and if this person is a ?red-flag?, its time delete them from your friend?s list, which can heal your relationship and also improves the bond.

Interestingly, women are more likely to use social networking sites than men since 2009:

  • In August 2012, 75% of women were users of social networking sites, where as 63% were men.
  • Women are more active users of these sites, where more than half of female users use them on typical day (54%), in comparison with 42% of male internet users. (February 2012)

Between February 2005 and August 2006, young adult internet users ages 18-29 jumped from 9% to 49% and have steadily increased since then.

impact of social networking sites.

However, As everything in this world has its own pros and cons ,we still are fanatic to what our neurons senses good for us.

Give Your Customer Service a Boost | Business 2 Community

Having a prepared and knowledgeable staff ready to handle customer issues is the key to excellent customer service and a company?s reputation. A healthy reputation is worth every penny spent on training. When thinking of great customer service, Nordstrom pops into my head. Nordstrom is known for its amazing customer service. Quality customer service is embedded into their employee training, company processes, policies and procedures. I could discuss how people take advantage of their easy return policy, but that is not the point of this article. I would like to focus on the benefits and impacts of excellent customer service.

When a customer service department is properly trained on their roles, responsibilities, level of authority and soft skills, they are likely to gain good standing with their customers and make a positive impact on the outlook of the company and its product and services.
What is excellent customer service, what are the impacts of good and bad customer service and how to achieve the former?

Let?s look closely at what makes up quality Customer Service and Agents:

Clear establishment of Roles & Responsibilities to agents

Their role is to be a helpful Customer Service Agent with the responsibility of resolving customer issues in a timely and respectable manner.

Provide Authority Levels to agents

In order to properly assist customers with returns, credits, exchanges or other concerns, agents must know what actions are within their realm of authority. The last thing a customer on the phone wants is to be placed on hold several times while the agent checks with a manager for every question asked.

Instill Confidence in agents

Companies can instill confidence in their agents by providing the right tools and techniques to get the job done. This will make them feel empowered and capable to perform their role with confidence. Tools and techniques can be as simple as an agent knowing his or her role & responsibility and authority level to having the appropriate hardware, software or management available to finalize a resolution.

Agents to show Commitment to customers

When the going gets tough, agents need to be able to walk customers through their issue and resolve it with satisfaction. If an agent is on a call, he or she can obtain a call back number from the customer in case the call gets dropped. If at a store location, the agent can stay solely focused on that customer and not multitask or help others when unnecessary. If the phone needs to be answered at a retail location while an agent is helping a customer, the agent should answer the phone and politely put the customer on hold to finish the transaction at hand. These are just a few ways to show commitment.

Agents to speak with Empathy to customers

Empathy can place the customer and the agent on the same level of understanding and often times have a calming effect on the customer. Agents should not put their customers in a position to feel stupid, cheap or of any less importance than the next customer.

Achieve a Win-Win Resolution with customers

Ending a call with a win-win solution is a key component to effective communication and successful customer satisfaction. Companies rely on their representatives to keep their customers happy and coming back again. If a customer has confidence in call resolutions, he or she is more likely to want to purchase products and services from that company.

Agents to show Respect at all times

Customers are typically calling in because they need the help of your agents. It goes back to the saying, ?treat people the way you would like to be treated.? Bottom line, bite your tongue, mind your manners, and be respectful to your customers. Not everyone is going to be as knowledgeable, technologically savvy and smart as the next person.

Agents should maintain constant Communication with customers

Customers need to feel that your agents are keeping them up-to-date during a call or in a store location. If an agent needs to read notes in the computer, he or she should let the customer know that is what?s going on. The last thing a customer should be wondering is if the agent is still on the phone or not or listen to awkward silence without knowing what it is for. In a retail environment, checking in with your customer during wait times can alleviate frustration, simply by acknowledging your customer is waiting for service.

Agents need to exude a Positive Attitude to customers

Having a positive attitude can be difficult for an agent who deals with feisty or difficult customers hour by hour. But agents need to remember that their verbal communication and attitude reflects the company?s reputation and to always keep that in mind no matter how feisty or difficult the customer is or how bad of a day the agent is having. Also, it is important to remember the next customer that you come in contact is a new beginning. Leave behind the negative feelings, if any, in your last encounter. First impressions last a lifetime, so ensure that you put your best foot forward when greeting a new customer.

Agents should be Proactive in providing resolutions to customers

By the agent being proactive to resolve the situation, the customer no longer needs to feel the need to fight for his or her request. Maybe the agent has the authority to present the option of a credit refund or a replacement product. What a relief to the customer to sit back and choose a resolution rather than fight for one.

It is important for agents to actively Listen to their customer needs

Customers want to know they are being heard. They want to feel that an agent is listening to their issue and can present a solution to fix it. After all, who wants to talk to a wall.

By adhering to the previous 11 key components to quality customer service, agents should be able to build a rapport with their customers. Establishing rapport is the key to gaining repeatable business, increasing positive word of mouth marketing, and reducing negative impacts on your brand reputation. And with a rapport built during the customer interaction, customers will often walk away or hang up the phone feeling pleased about their experience. The company?s reputation is hopefully left intact, and better yet, thought of in a brighter light.

DrCredit Educates Consumers Regarding Personal Loans | Finance

(PRWEB) November 23, 2012

DrCredit, the online loan service, announced today that conventional personal loans are available online to help cash-strapped consumers in a tough economy. DrCredit, an online service that offers $ 500 to $ 5000 loans brought directly to the consumer through an online application process, can produce multiple online loan offers in a matter of hours.

In an economy of continued volatility and unemployment, many people are finding it harder to get the personal loans they need to get to the end of the month. Further more they say, large lending institutions are closing their doors on consumers who need help. This negative attitude is not aimed only at consumers but small businesses as well.

DrCredit believes consumers should get the level of service they want when they apply for a loan. According to DrCredit, Many personal loan plans are available to consumers who can name a reason they want a loan and match it against personal loans plans that looks inviting.

A personal loan serves long-term needs like home or auto repairs. Cash to take a much needed vacation is a perfectly understandable reason to apply. Most large institutions will not give out unsecured personal loans today without an astonishing interest rate and fees attached.

With new online applications, getting a personal loan is simple, according to DrCredit. There are fewer inconveniences in applying online. Applicants don?t have to drive to the bank. Applicants won?t have to get in line or wait in suspense for an answer or receive a check that they must cash before the money is in the hand.

Consumers must provide only a small amount of information on the DrCredit application and that speeds up the processing time, according to representatives. Personal loans represent hope for trying financial situations. DrCredit says the loans can be used for anything, utility bills, mortgage payment, school supplies or walking around money to get borrowers through payday.

The application form is simple to fill out. The DrCredit website questions for an applicant?s name, address and social security number. Applicants must verify income and provide a checking account number before the money can be deposited, and that?s as much information as applicants are questioned to provide. DrCredit considers a consumer?s application and loans money based on statements of income.

The Personal loan can be used for major buys like buying a car. A personal loan can finance that long-overdue vacation. Debt consolidation is a terrific reason to use personal loans. Sources say loans are simple to apply for today because of the Internet. With the level of today?s technology, shopping for personal loans has become painless.

The stakes in taking out a loan are high for both the borrower and the lender. The lender faces the reality that even the best credit rating does not guarantee a borrower will not default on a loan, and a borrower puts their credit score on the line whenever they take out a loan, according to DrCredit. A loan with collateral, like a home, makes the choice to lend to a borrower simpler.

DrCredit says borrowers do not have to place up collateral to qualify for a personal loan, but the bank would likely charge a high interest rate without the collateral. Lenders also offer bonuses and extra incentives to lure borrowers into financial agreements. A borrower would be wise to use common sense when applying for a personal loan. DrCredit says borrowers should measure future gain against small-term gain even from a terrible credit personal loan in order to make a smart choice.
