Trying to decide which career to choose or ready to make a midcareer switch? For a taste of your possible future, consider job shadowing with LifeSwap, if you are in the Bay Area of California. As the LifeSwap website advocates ? put your passions to work.
The startup company of Stanford students and alumni concentrates on professional jobs, but possibilities are open to whatever hosts offer to share or explorers want to experience.
Bastiaan Janmaat, co-founder, told RESCUECOM, ?LifeSwap?s mission is to give people more insight into what it?s like to work in certain jobs, so people can make more educated career decisions. We?re currently focused on the Bay Area, where we seek to help great companies get in touch with ambitious job-seekers, who can come in for lunch, get a tour of the company, meet-and-greet various people, and maybe even sit in on a meeting or two. It?s a low-risk way to `get a feel for the place.? ?
LifeSwap gives people solid information on which to base their career choices. It is hard to know how a person will fare in a particular career or company until he or she actually makes an effort. Trying out a new experience that sounds appealing could make you even more enthusiastic to pursue the opportunity or could point out that you are not well suited for it.
Either way, LifeSwap offers an inexpensive view into a career before you spend a lot of money on educating yourself. The short-term LifeSwap experience could even lead to a job offer or a mentoring relationship. Groups of up to five explorers get a glimpse into a typical day at the selected company.
?We think this is vital in helping people ? young and old ? make better career decisions,? Janmaat added.
The host sets a price and time period, usually a few hours, for the shadowing and decides which applicants to accept. There are benefits for both hosts and explorers. The hosts can earn money for sharing their expertise, plus teaching is a great way to see what you know about something. The students learn lessons not normally available in the classroom.
LifeSwap host companies can rely on professionals such as RESCUECOM for office computer repair to make sure explorers have access to working computers.
LifeSwap screens hosts and explorers to make sure the experiences will be ?authentic? and valuable for all parties. Hosts have the opportunity to inspire others, as well as generate goodwill for their company. They can even ask enthusiastic explorers for ideas or input to benefit the company. Or hosts might be inspired to later try a LifeSwap as an explorer.
As LifeSwap explorers get career support from experienced hosts, they can also get computer support from experienced technicians.
The team hopes to expand the LifeSwap concept into other areas in the future. This sounds like a good premise to bring to other parts of the country.
